He had a seriously messed up childhood. It is painful to read of the levels he would sink to, the efforts made to get clean, rehab facilities he would escape from, and his inevitable descent into addiction again. And honestly, he should have cut them out because this damn book goes on and on and never ends. Almost half of the book was about how he got high, how he messed up things, how he just got lucky with everything.
There are some parallels between Kiedis and Morrison. Both may have qualified as “erotic politicians”, Morrison’s clever depiction of the Doors to a stunned and befuddled media. I never thought Anthony was anything special. I really think Anthony Kiedis is a sweetheart. People were reading it in hospitals, in prisons and schools and it was having a positive effect.
